The Innkeepers
A film brought to you by Ti West [The House of the Devil]. I already expected a film with a lot of buildup, and believe me there was plenty.
The Yankee Pedlar Inn is about to close, two employees stay for the weekend before it closes to try to uncover a mystery that they have heard so much about. With the alleged ghost of Madeline O’Malley walking the halls, Sara, and Pat are determined to find proof of her existence before the hotel is closed for good. Madeline was a ghost of the hotel numerous years back, she was suppose to get married but when her husband to be never shows she kills herself. With the hotel rumored to be haunted by Madeline the two, Sara and Pat try to conduct a few EVP sessions, and still try to put up with the few guests that are staying for the weekend.
During the film we get a few glimpses of Madeline, and Sara slowly becomes obsessed with finding answers. There’s A LOT of dialogue in this movie, much like The House of the Devil the film thrives off of the suspense. I was okay with most of the movie but what killed it for me was when things finally started to unravel it seemed to be over.
A nice attempt at a ghost flick that wasn’t overdone with garbage CGI, Madeline looked simple, and not over the top. The plot went off well too, there was plenty of suspense, and the acting seemed pretty on point. The characters seemed real too, no supermodels running around showing horrible acting skills. I just wish that the ending was a little long, with all that build up for things to finally happen I felt let down towards the end. It build up really well, and maybe I’m greedy and just wanted a little more… but I truly feel that the ending was just rushed. It was a quick turn of events.
The film is definitely worth a watch if you’re a fan of suspense, ghost stories, and nothing over the top. If you’re looking for a splatterfest, something brutal, or something gory then this film is not for you.
